Duda Penteado, a solo exhibition @ Cintron Vidal Gallery Dallas
Duda Penteado is a visual artist, filmmaker, educator and cultural visionary, who has been living between the United States and Brazil for more than 20 years.
His multidisciplinary practice is based on performances, videos, installations, murals, sculptures, paintings and other visual practices. Duda has dedicated much of his work to important issues related to peace, globalization, the diaspora, dual citizenship and other geopolitical and social phenomena of the 21st century. He has had many exhibitions at galleries, cultural institutions and museums throughout the United States and Brazil, as well as Europe. He is an art professor at the Paul Robeson Program and a member of the Jersey City Public Arts Advisory Board.
Duda’s work cannot be relegated to solely a movement or a particular country. It is clearly the art of a global thinker. Leo Castelli, the New York art collector and dealer who played an extraordinary role in shaping contemporary American art and fostering international acceptance of painters like Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg and Roy Lichtenstein once said in an interview; “I love the art of an intellectual.”
What you are experiencing in this exhibition, is the art of an intellectual, a visual pedagogy of the highest order, attempting to steer the culture with his art and film by setting the stage for communities to engage in local and international dialogue on primordial and elemental human concerns. This is someone who perhaps, at times lives tormented in his soul by what he sees and hears. As a human projector, he projects his burdens on the canvas, city walls or perhaps a movie screen. The arts steer the culture and as you may have already noticed, his works have its hands on the steering wheel.
Today we stand before a great body of work that alongside some of the greatest thinkers of the 21st century compels us to pursue truth at all costs. “Truth is too important to kill it in the streets for the sake of peace.” – R. C. Sproul
