Biography

Duda Penteado is an “ARTIVIST” (visual artist, filmmaker, educator and cultural visionary) who lives between the United States and Brazil for more than 25 years. His multidisciplinary practice is based on performances, videos, installations, murals, sculptures, paintings and other visual artistic manifestations. Duda has dedicated much of his work to important social issues related to racial injustice, sustainability, cultural identity, globalization, and other geopolitical and social phenomena of the 21st century. He has had many exhibitions at galleries, cultural institutions and museums throughout the United States and Brazil, as well as Europe.

Duda’s work cannot be relegated to solely a movement or a particular country. It is clearly the art of a global thinker. What you will experience as you get to know more of Duda and his artwork, is the art of an intellectual, a visual pedagogy of the highest order, attempting to steer the culture with his art by setting the stage for communities to engage in local and international dialogue on essential human concerns.

Duda also was President of the Artist Certification Board, of the City of Jersey City, NJ, until 2010. Today he is an artist – teacher at Paul Robenson Galleries at Express Newark Rutgers University. The Creative Director of Jersey City Youth Works Public Art Program and serves at Jersey City Public Arts Advisory Board, and Jersey City Theater Center Board. Duda has been a recipient of several awards and recognized from various institutions in the United States including : Urban Artist Fellowship Award, Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, VT; Goldman Sachs Student Art Project Grant, Jersey City, NJ (2006, 2007, 2008); Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation; The Robert Flaherty Film Seminar, Claremont, CA; Special Guest for Artistic Achievement & Commitment to YMCA Greater, NY-Youth, NYC; American Graphic Design Award, Interactive Multimedia Installation, NYC; Humanitarian Award from the Hudson County Chapter of the American Conference on Diversity, Jersey City, NJ, and received a Kappa Pi International Honorary Art Fraternity Award, Eta Rho Chapter, New Jersey City University, Jersey City, NJ., JCAC Public Art Award 2019, Jersey City,NJ, ” The Jewel of JK ” Juscelino Kubitschek Award at United Nations – CICESP, NYC. Along with Mario Tapia and Dr. Carlos Hernandez, he has been at the helm of the We Are You Project since 2015.
